INFORMATION & ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE - Joanna S. Kao leads the Pulitzer Center’s AI Accountability Network, overseeing global reporting projects that investigate the impact of AI and machine learning. A former tech lead at the Financial Times and multimedia developer at Al Jazeera America, she brings deep expertise in data, design, and storytelling to coverage of emerging technology. Her reporting examines how AI both enables and harms disabled people, revealing a “disability data desert” that limits innovation and raises serious ethical concerns. As companies rush to market AI-powered accessibility tools to meet growing regulatory pressure, Kao’s work exposes inflated claims and a lack of transparency around whether these tools actually help users. She highlights how biases embedded in data and design can exclude those with disabilities—and why better standards, accountability, and inclusion are urgently needed.GLOBAL HEALTH - Molly Knight Raskin, a freelance journalist and documentary producer, investigates the global fallout of the Trump administration’s abrupt shutdown of USAID in Cuts and Consequences: The End of USAID. Working with PBS NewsHour correspondent William Brangham, she tracks what happens when an agency once responsible for distributing $40 billion a year in aid suddenly disappears.
